Smoke Description

Descriptive text narrative for smoke/dust observed in satelite imagery through Sept. 3, 2024, 9:03 p.m.

SMOKE:
Canada/United States - A large area of light-to-moderate density smoke attributed to wildfire activity across northwestern and central Canada was observed traveling eastward across Canada into the Hudson Bay, as well as drifting southward into the Central United States. By later this afternoon most of these fires became heavily cloud covered precluding further smoke analysis.

Idaho/Montana/Washington State - Continued wildfires in the Boise National Park region (Western Idaho), and Central Washington State were observed producing large amounts of moderate to possibly thick smoke that extended northeast into Montana, southern Saskatchewan, northern Wyoming, the Dakotas, Wisconsin and into Minnesota. Heavy cloud cover throughout the regions precluded a more detailed analysis of the smoke density.

FAQs

How high does wildfire smoke travel? ›

Wildfire fire smoke can ascend as high as 5 miles into the atmosphere1, reaching the troposphere which is the lowest part of the atmosphere where thunderstorms form. The specific height can vary depending on various factors, such as the strength of the fire, weather conditions, and the surrounding terrain.

Does wildfire smoke sink? ›

The intense heat generated by an active wildfire drives smoke high into the air where it remains until it cools and begins to descend. As smoke moves downward to ground level, it becomes more diluted and often more widespread. Terrain also affects smoke concentrations.

Can you see wildfire smoke from space? ›

NASA's Aqua satellite, which circles our planet from south to north over the equator, imaged the smoke from some of the region's fires, which covered about two-thirds of the Gulf of Mexico.

Is it safe to hike in wildfire smoke? ›

No one wants to hear this, but hiking through smoky conditions isn't the best idea. Smoke inhalation can have serious consequences beyond just eye and throat irritation. “Every year, I see an influx of patients with asthma and COPD whose symptoms are exacerbated by wildfires,” says Wilgus.

Can planes fly in wildfire smoke? ›

While smoke can certainly reduce visibility, it can also present other hazards that pilots and flight crews need to be aware of. One of the biggest risks associated with flying in heavy smoke is the potential damage it can cause to aircraft engines.

What clears smoke from the air? ›

One of the most effective ways to clean smoke from indoor environments is to attach a MERV 13 furnace filter to a box fan. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency tested this method with air monitors and found that a box fan filter reduced airborne particulate matter dramatically.

Does rain clear out wildfire smoke? ›

When it rains, the water droplets capture and bring down the smoke particles to the ground, effectively reducing the concentration of smoke in the air. This process is called coagulation and can lead to improved air quality and better visibility, providing some relief from the smoky conditions caused by wildfires.

Is it bad to breathe in wildfire smoke? ›
