Smoke Description

Descriptive text narrative for smoke/dust observed in satelite imagery through Sept. 4, 2024, 12:03 a.m.

SMOKE:
Canada/United States - A large area of light-to-moderate density smoke attributed to wildfire activity across northwestern and central Canada was observed traveling eastward across Canada into the Hudson Bay, as well as drifting southward into the Central United States. By later this afternoon most of these fires became heavily cloud covered precluding further smoke analysis.

Idaho/Montana/Washington State - Continued wildfires in the Boise National Park region (Western Idaho), and Central Washington State were observed producing large amounts of moderate to possibly thick smoke that extended northeast into Montana, southern Saskatchewan, northern Wyoming, the Dakotas, Wisconsin and into Minnesota. Heavy cloud cover throughout the regions precluded a more detailed analysis of the smoke density.

FAQs

Why is it smoky in Southern California? ›

California has experienced some of the most destructive wildfire seasons in recent years. Large wildfires often produce intense smoke that can pose serious health risks.

How to find where smoke is coming from? ›

EPA AirNow Fire & Smoke Map

The EPA Fire & Smoke Map displays the most current and comprehensive information on wildfires, smoke and air quality. You'll see air quality readings from both regulatory air monitoring stations and the most accurate readings from crowd-sourced, portable air quality sensors.

What are the effects of wildfire smoke? ›

Inhaling smoke for a short time can cause immediate effects. Smoke irritates the eyes, nose, and throat, and its odor can be nauseating. Studies show that some people exposed to heavy smoke have temporary changes in lung function that makes breathing more difficult. People can also have changes in heart function.

How long do wildfires last? ›

Since the 1970s, the wildfire season in western states has extended from 5 months to over 7 months in length.

Why is it so hazy outside? ›

Haze often occurs when suspended dust and smoke particles accumulate in relatively dry air. When weather conditions block the dispersal of smoke and other pollutants they concentrate and form a usually low-hanging shroud that impairs visibility and may become a respiratory health threat if excessively inhaled.

How long can you be outside with unhealthy air quality? ›

(2-4 hours)

If outdoors, sensitive groups should keep activities light and avoid activities over 2 hours. Consider moving practices and events indoors. If events are not cancelled, increase rest periods to allow for lower breathing rates. Everyone should remain indoors as much as possible.

Why do I feel like I'm in a smoky room? ›

Olfactory hallucinations lasting more than a few minutes to several hours are usually due to a disturbance of the smell system in the nose (olfactory organ or olfactory nerves) or in the olfactory bulb, which sits just inside the skull above the upper nose level.
