>> reporter: the latest in a series of events. and no one was injured today, a different story earlier today, a lot of activity here 11 this morning, two inmates, refused to come out and the handcuffs. and six deputies dressed in tactical gear, responding to the situation. they also found jail made weapons they believe were used by individuals. after nearly two hours of negotiation, the latest in a series of incidents at san francisco county jail's. according to the sheriff department, nine deputies and staff have been injured or sultan since march 29, while the public defender's office believes that staffing shortages are to blame,

pointing to carotid jails and violent offenders and delayed court cases as the major factors behind a spike in violence. >> the uptick is something we want to address immediately, which is why we are doing what we are doing right now. it will not just be a lockdown as was mentioned earlier but the follow-up that will involve not just our staff but command staff, all the resources and partnerships with behavioral health and mental health. >> the sheriff department has deployed 130 deputies to join the joint drug task force in the tenderloin. so they do have staff that are out in the fields, doing other things. so that is kind of one source that we would point to.>> reporter: now both the downtown sam cisco jails have been in lockdown since monday, and a deputy sustained a head injury after being punched repeatedly, and at one point, and the

national guard be called in to help bridge the staff shortage but today the sheriff says he believes deputies can handle the situation without outside help. the lockdown the jail to, downtown san francisco will be lifted tomorrow, here that is set to reopen. in a couple of days later this week, reporting live in san bruno, nbc area news. a shooting killing two teenage girls, and riverside drive, the sheriff's office says it arrested 22-year-old john nicholson junior of alejo, leading up to the shooting, and also arrested, charges of aiding a felony and so far no motive has been revealed.>>

scott peterson was back in court, the first in three hearings to determine whether the convicted killer will get to enter new evidence in his fight for a new trial. ian cole was in the courtroom in san mateo county, where the 51-year-old peterson appeared virtually. >> reporter: today scott peterson made his second appearance in court virtually this year, sporting a ponytail and only speaking to confirm he could hear and see the proceeding from millcreek state prison. >> i can, thank you. >> reporter: emotion to seal documents from public view in a push to get his murder conviction overturned, serving life without patrol -- parole for the murder of his wife and unborn son.>> reporter: they want to take the identity of people they interviewed, who fear retaliation from the modesto police department. but after it was agreed, the names will remain redacted. >> ultimately the defense will
