Titanic survivor's letter sells for record breaking £300,000

A letter written by one of most well-known survivors of the Titanic disaster has sold for a record-breaking £300,000 at auction. First-class passenger Colonel Archibald Gracie wrote The Truth About The Titanic, which described his experience of the April 15 1912 tragedy that claimed 1,500 lives.

The letter card is dated April 10 1912, the day he boarded, and is postmarked Queenstown 3.45pm April 11 and London April 12.

It said: "It is a fine ship but I shall await my journeys end before I pass judgment on her."

The historic item sold for five times the expected price of £60,000 at Henry Aldridge and Son, of Devizes, Wiltshire, on April 26. It is the highest price ever achieved for letter written on board the Titanic, the auctioneers said.

Father Ted co-creator charged with harassment and criminal damage

Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan has been charged with harassment and criminal damage. The Irish comedy writer, 56, wrote on social media that the allegations were related to an incident at the Battle of Ideas conference in London in October. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed Linehan has been charged with both harassment without violence, and criminal damage.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 12, a CPS spokesperson said.

The Bafta-winning writer, who also came up with TV sitcoms The IT Crowd and Black Books, has become a strong vocal critic of the trans rights movement in recent years.

In a post on X on Saturday, he claimed that the charge related to a complaint from a trans activist. In 2023, he recalled in his book titled Tough Crowd: How I Made And Lost A Career In Comedy, that he lost his comedy career after he "championed an unfashionable cause".

Linehan created Father Ted in the 1990s with fellow Irish writer Arthur Mathews.

Vehicle appears to drive into people at Just Stop Oil march

A vehicle appears to have driven slowly into Just Stop Oil (JSO) protesters as hundreds marched through London for the group's "last day of action". A mass of people wearing JSO's signature orange vests rallied on Saturday afternoon.

This comes after the group claimed a victory on new oil and gas licenses and said "we're hanging up the hi vis" and "we will take to the streets one last time".

Activists appeared to occasionally block roads on the Trafalgar Square roundabout during the planned walk from St James' Park to Waterloo.

Video taken by the PA news agency seems to show a man slowly driving a white minivan carrying a child and at least one other passenger towards protesters for the environmental campaign group.

People standing front of the vehicle, some holding a JSO banner, look to hold their hands up with one shouting "officer, I'm being pushed back".

The minivan appeared to edge forwards until the bonnet was pressing against them.
