Skip the frozen aisle and make Homemade Tater Tots. It’s easy! No fancy equipment needed, just potatoes, cornstarch and seasonings of your choice.

When it comes to potatoes, I will eat them any which way I can get them. I love potato chips, french fries, baked potatoes, twice baked potatoes, creamy homemade mashed potatoes and oven roasted red potatoes.

But when I am out at a restaurant and see the words “Tater tots” on the menu, I cannot help myself. An up-charge for substituting tater tots for french fries? TAKE ALL MY MONEY.

I love them. My kids love them. My friends love them. Their kids love them. Basically, the bitesized pieces of fried potato goodness are a favorite for everyone. And yes, you can buy frozen tater tots at the grocery store and I often do. But those are usually lacking flavor, can sometimes be too small and are just not nearly as fun to make!

What ingredients do you need?

Before we get to just how easy tater tots are to make homemade, let’s talk about ingredients you’ll need. It’s literally 6 ifyou count salt and pepper.

To make them you’ll need:

Russet Potatoes: Just classic ol’ russet potatoes work best for this recipe. You’ll want to peel them too.

Cornstarch: Other tater tot recipes call for flour to hold everything together. I personally love that cornstarch makes fried food a bit crispier so I use that instead. It works just like flourand it makes these tater tots gluten free.

Seasonings: This recipe calls for granulated (or powdered) garlic, salt, pepper and paprika for a hint of smokiness and color.

DES’ TIP:The seasonings is where you get to be the most creative with this recipe. Use this recipe as a base but add whatever seasonings you like best. You could add dill, or rosemary or thyme. You could also do a spicy cajun version like my favorite restaurant totsever, the McMenamins Cajun Tots. If you use a seasoning blend that has salt, omit the additional salt in this recipe.

How do you make Tater Tots from scratch?

Not only are tater tots fun to make at home, they are also SUPER easy to make. These step by step photos and instructions will show you just how easy!

STEP 1: Peel the potatoes and place them in a large pot of water. Bring to a boil and boil just until par-boiled. 6.- 7 minutes.

DES’ TIP:Be careful not to overcook the potatoes. They still need to be firm to grate.

STEP 2: Remove potatoes and place on a paper-towel lined surface. Pat them dry and allow them to cool to the touch.

STEP 3: Once potatoes are cool, grate the potatoes. Use the larger side of the grater.

STEP 4: Combine the potatoes with cornstarch, paprika, granulated garlic, salt and pepper. Mix well until combined.

STEP 5: Using about 1 tablespoon of the mixture, form into “tot” shape.

STEP 6: Heat oil in a large heavy bottomed pot to 400 degrees. Fry the tater tots in batches until golden brown, 2 – 3 minutes. Transferring the cooked tots to a cooling rack in a warmed oven to keep warm.

DES’ TIP:Like any fried food, it is important to avoid overcrowding the pan. Putting too many tots in at one time will result in them steaming more than frying and they won’t get nearly as crispy.

Traditionally, Tater Tots are deep fried. However, you can also make this recipe in the air fryer. Simply spray them lightly with non-stick spray and cook them at 390 degrees for about 15 minutes, shaking every 5.

I can’t talk these babies up enough. I served them with burgers and my kiddos devoured them. But don’t just take my word for it! Try them yourself, you’ll be glad you did.

    FAQs

How do they get tater tots to stick together? ›

We know that what keeps the Tater Tots stuck together is a combination of two pretty sticky things: moist starches and proteins. The more they come in contact with each other, the stickier they become, and the tighter/gummier the Tater Tots will be.

How do I get the crispiest tater tots? ›

A slightly longer cook time makes the most delicious difference in both the taste and texture of tater tots. A longer cook time will cause the tots to shrink and dry out a little, which makes them even crispier all around on the outside with a potato-y center that's more dense and creamy.

How are tater tots made in the factory? ›

Once the potatoes are properly mixed with the binders and seasonings, they are formed into the iconic cylindrical or barrel-shaped tater tots using specially designed machines. These machines shape the mixture into regular-sized tots through a process called extrusion.

Why aren't my tater tots getting crispy? ›

You want them crispy, tater tots need to be cooked at a high temperature for this to happen. 375-400F is great, I find 375F the sweet spot to get them crispy but to also cook the inside before the outside burns.

Why are my homemade tater tots falling apart? ›

Important: Once you put the tots in the oil don't move them around until they start to get golden brown. If they are jostled too much before they've had a chance to cook they will fall apart.

How do you make tater tots not fall apart? ›

    All-Purpose Flour.

Helps bind the potatoes, so the tater tots hold their shape and don't fall apart after baking.

How do you fry tater tots without them sticking together? ›

I like to hang the basket with the food in it over the oil as the oil is heating. Then I give the basket a shake before it gets immersed. Wait a few seconds after you put the items in the oil and take a metal spoon and separate any that are stuck together. It's important to do this early in the frying process.

Why do tater tots taste different than fries? ›

You might think tater tots would taste like fries, but fries are just chunks of potatoes that are fried. Tots are potatoes chopped up into tiny bits, then mixed with seasonings and binder (corn flour, I think), so they taste slightly different, as well as having a different consistency.…

Why do tater tots taste different? ›

Restaurants Add Extra Seasoning And Spices

It's not just the salt that makes a big difference on tots, though. Restaurants also use an array of extra seasonings and spices for bigger, better, more noteworthy flavors in their tots.

What were tater tots originally called? ›

    From tater treats to imi-taters

Nephi Grigg of Ore-Ida in 1953 as a way to use excess potato shavings that came from making frozen french fries. Originally, the shavings were sold as livestock feed. The term “tater tot” is a proprietary name owned by Ore-Ida.

What country invented tater tots? ›

    United States

What are tater tots called in England? ›

Here in the UK you won't find 'tater tots' in the supermarkets. However you will find hash browns which are basically tater tots formed into a larger, usually triangle shape.

Are tater tots better in the oven or air fryer? ›

To the surprise of absolutely no one, air fryer tater tots are even better than oven-baked. They're ready in way less time, are supremely crispy and delicious, and are by far the best way to mimic deep-fried restaurant tots at home.

Why can't you put tater tots in the microwave? ›

    Don't Use the Microwave!

Tater tots and French fries never taste the same when microwaved. It's where all of those legends about being unable to reheat potato products comes from. You're left with a mushy soggy mess, and no one likes that. That's because heating fried foods in the microwave is never a good idea.

How long should I deep fry tater tots for? ›

Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lower potato nuggets carefully into the hot oil in batches, about 5 to 10 at a time. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Should you salt tater tots before or after cooking? ›

Salt: Omit if the tots have salt added already. You can always salt them when they come out of the oven if needed. Cayenne: These have a mild amount of spice. Increase to ½-3/4 teaspoon to make them spicier.
