Per North Hollywood LAPD, etching a converter with your license plate or VIN number may be a deterrent. It will assist police to track the converter in the event it is stolen. As a reminder, Toyota Prius vehicles are primary targets for catalytic converter thefts. NOTE: In 9/2022, Governor Gavin Newsom signed two new laws (SB 1087 and AB 1740), which will increase penalties for buyers who fail to certify that a Catalytic Converter wasn't stolen. As of 1/1/2023, it will be illegal in California to buy Catalytic Converters from anyone other than licensed auto dismantlers or dealers. As comparison, LAPD is reporting a +0.1% increase in Part I Crime for -7- LAPD Valley Bureau Patrol Divisions for 1 – 2/2024 Year-to-Date. Grand Theft Auto, Theft, Aggravated Assault, Homicide, and Robbery are reporting year-to-date increases in North Hollywood: Grand Theft Auto +25.6% year-to-date; Theft +31.9% year-to-date including a +154% increase in reported Shoplifting Crimes; Aggravated Assault +13.2% year-to-date; and Robbery increased +11.8% year-to-date. -2- Homicide Crimes were reported year-to-date in North Hollywood. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Also note that Theft (Personal / Other) increased +31.9% year-to-date in North Hollywood, which includes a +71 (or +154%) increase in reported Shoplifting Thefts year-to-date. Less reported Shoplifting Thefts, All Other Theft decreased <1.8%> year-to-date in North Hollywood. This increase may be in part due to changes in corporate policies regarding reporting Shoplifting Thefts to North Hollywood LAPD with thefts underreported during the pandemic in 2020 through 2022. Also, additional stores opened at one of these retail locations in spring, 2023. For example, -3- of the Top -5- retail locations reported -350- Shoplifting Thefts during the past 12-months in North Hollywood. CAL FIRE2+ weeks agoAgencySerial Arsonist Arrested in El Dorado County. Suspect arrested on suspicion of starting fires in El Dorado and Amador counties On October 23, 2023, El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputies arrested an individual for a CAL FIRE-related warrant in El Dorado County for three fires that occurred in Pollock Pines in mid-September. Since the individual was taken into custody, he has been charged with two additional fires, totaling five fires between El Dorado and Amador counties. With assistance from CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, and the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, Steven Saunders, age 27, was arrested and booked in the El Dorado County Jail on suspicion of arson and starting fires at the following locations: • A structure fire on September 13, 2023, at 2:33 a.m. at the Taco Bell Building at 6454 Pony Express Trail in Pollock Pines. • A vegetation fire on September 13, 2023, at 9:48 p.m. behind the Family Dollar Store at 6524 Pony Express Trail in Pollock Pines. • A vegetation fire on September 14, 2023, at 5:18 a.m. behind CVS Drugs at 6450 Pony Express Trail in Pollock Pines. • A vegetation fire on October 21, 2023, at 4:00 a.m. in the area of Meadow View Road and Shenandoah Road in River Pines. • A vegetation fire (the Ore Fire) on October 23, 2023, at 3:39 p.m. in the area of Highway 49 and Ore Court in Logtown. Through evidence obtained at the fire scenes, all fires were determined to be arson. CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers work diligently to investigate all fires and apprehend those suspected of starting fires. From January 1, 2023, through September 30, 2023, CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers have made 88 arson arrests. CAL FIREa week agoAgencyOn March 31, 2024, and April 8, 2024, the California State University, San Jose (SJSU) Police and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) - Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Arson and Bomb Unit responded to fires in the Martin Luther King Jr. Library on the SJSU campus. The investigation revealed the fire causes were arson, on State of California property, and occupied by students at the time of the arson fires. The joint law enforcement investigation was a collaboration between SJSU Police and the CAL FIRE – OSFM Arson and Bomb Unit. All personnel involved worked tirelessly to canvass the area, review security camera footage, cultivate leads, and ultimately identify the suspect. The suspect was identified as SJSU sophom*ore student Amogh Upadhya. Amogh Upadhya was arrested and charged with four (4) counts of Arson and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. Upadhya is being held on $400,000.00 bail until a court hearing on April 12, 2024.
