Yes, you can play Solo - but it's recommended for the challenge, not a standard playthrough. You can solo with the Lone Wolf perk (talent), or go with two Lone Wolves (3 and 4 won't work with that), but for the first playthrough, it's better to have a full 4 people party.

Player Characters

At the start of the game you can create and fully customize two characters. Later in the game, you can hire two additional characters. You can choose a predefined class for your characters or create your own.

You get 3 party member slots but you can swap people out whenever you want, you just have to dismiss one and then go find the person you want to recruit. Early on they're in random spots but after a certain point they'll all be on your ship. You can also completely respec any character.

The warrior class is probably the easiest to get started with (and in terms of unique weapons, the game is fairly biased towards swords). The survivor class tends to be the most challenging to play; they have skills for daggers, but the damage output isn't going to match that of a sword.
