Seven years ago my friend Søren complained that the economy in the game Path of Exile was hard to grasp. I created a small site over the weekend that would track the market data and aggregate prices to give a better overview. A reddit post with great feedback and a few weeks later I bought a domain and re-launched the site as https://poe.ninja. As a fun challenge I decided I wanted to run the site on a single CPU core and designed accordingly. That design turned out to be a good decision, as the site has grown and grown over the years, both in terms of traffic and functionality (and cores). Today the site site serves 4M+ daily page views in the peak of the 3 month Path of Exile league cycle and supplies a large number of other community tools and sites with data.Tomorrow I'll travel to New Zealand to attend Exilecon, a conference by Grinding Gear Games, the creators of Path of Exile. Really looking forward to meet up with the developers and the other attendees, hopefully learn a lot more about the direction of the game and actually get to talk to some real users of my site.I can't recommend side projects like this enough. The fast feedback loop combined with owning the entire stack provides great perspective for my job at Templafy. It doesn't need to be popular, I definitely have 10s if not 100s of shelved side projects, I learned something from each of them. It doesn't need to be open source - while I like to work on libraries in public, I decided early in this project that this was my playground. No need for issues, pull requests or communcation overhead, just whatever I wanted.
